Thursday 12 August 2010 Grossglockner

We are off this morning to drive the magnificent Grossglockner High Alpine Road. I hope the weather is better than the forecast or we are in for a wet day.
I drive via Lofer and Zell am See to the first restaurant by the toll booth. Here we have a coffee break.
Mrs Luckhurst orders a slice of gateux in the cafe and is asked how many. She replies only one as it is too sweet. The waiter takes her too as two and brings out two cakes! I think most of the coach eat some of the extra cake!
I pay the toll of €62.40 and we are off on one of Europe's great drives. The cloud is high and not hiding any of the mounatins as we climb up and up. Near to the top it starts to rain and my only concern was as we drove over the top and started our descent the roads were very wet so taking it slowly was the order of the day. I think having the cloud and mist close by made the journey more dramatic and certainly the passengers enjoyed it. We continued on to the parking place at Frans Joseph Hohe and from here you can either walk or take the shuttle bus a little higher to see the glacier.
The scenery is stunning but I think the most popular sight of the day was the marmottes near to the coach park!
There weren't too many of them about, probably because it was cold and damp, but a few sightings were made and captured on camera.
From here we continued to Heilinglut where there is a well known, and well photographed, church as well as a pretty village centre.
From here we went to Lienz and then on to Mittersel and finally Kirchberg. The journey home took slightly longer than planned and we arrived back at our hotel at 18:20.
I went out for dinner tonight to a nearby Italian and had a lovely pizza and a couple of glasses of red.
