We have a holiday going to Guernsey going today and Nicola is going as courier for the first time. She has often helped when on holiday with us but for the next 5 days she is working!
The ferry times changed to those planned and we are now on the 06:30 sailing from Weymouth! Some passengers are being picked up at 02:15! I have apologised for this very early start and only hope it doesn’t detract from what should be a lovely holiday.
We are off to the royal palace of Het Loo situated near the town of Apeldoorn, a couple of hours from Den Haag.
Because of all the traffic problems yesterday we are now departing at 08:00 from near the hotel and then will be picking up Nancy from outside Central Station.
I drive from the hotel towards Central Station which we can now see in front of us. Without wanting to we drive into a tunnel and the station disappears from view! This is not planned! Coming out the other side I come unstuck down one road with low bridges at every turn. I three point across the tram lines and disappear back down the tunnel and come out at the rear of the station. Nancy is at the front! Neil runs through and finds Nancy and off we go.
It is all motorway today with the first hour spent on the A12. My sat nav is sending me towards Amsterdam on the A4 and then across country on the N11 to join up with the A12.
I follow this but think I have made a mistake. Too late, I’m committed now. What it has done is avoid heavy traffic on the A12 and sent me another way. The N11 is all dual carriageway and we are soon back on the A12. Clever stuff.
Het Loo is gorgeous with a lovely palace, great gardens and fountains and a museum showing many royal carriages and cars. I have a quick walk around the gardens and go back to the coach for more paperwork! I also fit in an hour’s snooze which I didn’t expect to do but must have needed.
We are away from here by 15:30 and back in Den Haag two hours later.
I am looking forward to a beer and nice meal tonight as I haven’t got to drive until 11:30 in the morning.
I have a couple of Guinness’s in Ned Kellys bar before going to look for a restaurant.
I have seen a small Italian that looks good so after a walk around the city centre I make my way to this little Trattoria called Casa da Toni.
I immediately like the atmosphere and the fact that there is no menu! The waiter explains the choices and you then crack on with it.
There was a choice of two starters, followed by a plate of three different pasta’s and then I chose steak over fish.
All complimented with hot ciabatta and a dip of olive oil.
What a fantastic experience.
Until I came to pay that is! I gave the man my card but his machine wouldn’t accept a pin coded card. And I didn’t have enough cash on me. Toni somehow knew I was staying at the Park Hotel and said pay later. I wanted to pay then so went for a brisk walk to the nearest cashpoint (10 mins) to draw out the cash to pay for my meal.
It was all sorted and I left a happy chappy.
The whole evening was great and I came out smiling.

We never heard how the Guernsey trip went or how Nicola got on working as Courier, we've been on holidays where she has helped before and she has always done a wonderful job so we are sure she would have done very well.
