Another sunny start to the day as we depart at 09:00 for
the spectacular Mizen Head. For half an hour we follow the route we took
yesterday before branching off at Billydehob, a colourful village at the start
of the Mizen Head road.
The road is narrow in places and passes the sea at very
close quarters as we wind our way to Mizen Head. The nearest analogy I could
make is that it is very much like Lands End, especially in scenery not in
tourist tack.
We pass some fantastic golden beaches on our way and
arrive at Mizen Head at 10:30. It has been a lovely drive helped by the lack of
traffic.
I go in and buy a ticket for everyone and off they go. We
are due to leave at 13:00 but I expect a few back before then.
In the main building is the visitor centre, shop and cafe
and from here you can walk the many paved pathways.
One way is down to viewing platforms close to the sea
while another you can walk down to the recently rebuilt bridge and over to the
old lighthouse keepers buildings now housing a museum.
I have walked down to the sea before and got as far as
the new bridge was a little too scared to walk over it. I don’t like bridges!
Today I don’t walk too far but enjoy the stunning views
all the same.
Most of the group make it down to, and across, the bridge
which is a magnificent achievement as the walk back is very steep.
No leaving early today as they all enjoy Mizen Head
though it is a quiet coach on the way back!
The drive back is glorious and I manage to stop for a couple of minutes on one of the bends to take a picture of the beautiful beaches.
We are back at the hotel by 14:30 with the rest of the afternoon free.
Some of the group go walking by the sea while others stroll up to the little village centre and all of them would probably have a lie down sometime this afternoon after their exertions this morning!
I am quite boring and do some bookwork for a couple of hours before forcing myself on the gym for 40 minutes and then by the time I'm showered and dressed it is time for a Guinness!
I only had a scone at Mizen Head and am absolutely famished a couple of hours before dinner so when I go for my pint of the black stuff I fancy a bag of crisps or maybe some peanuts. No chance, this is the only bar in Cork that doesn't sell crisps!
Oh well I'll enjoy my dinner all the more.
