Monday 21st September Kaunertal

Am up and about at six today after a good nights sleep and am the first in for breakfast. The rolls are still warm and the butter melts on them! I was going to be good and have cereal and fruit but how can you not eat warm bread rolls fresh from the bakery over the road?!
Today we are going to drive the Kaunertal which is a mountain road up to 9,022 feet above sea level.
We are away at 9 o'clock and are once again blessed with good weather. It is cloudy but you can see the sun behind burning them away, at least that is what we hope for!
The journey to the top of the Kaunertal is stunning and today there is very little traffic which makes the actual driving a lot easier. This is a toll road and the cost for us to take 30 people on it is 154 Euros! Not cheap but when you have weather like today it seems worth every penny, or cent!
I say there is little traffic but we did meet the post bus on his way down at one of the narrow points in the road! The bus stop at the top is the highest in Austria.
Once at the top we have about an hour so people can enjoy a coffee and cake in the vast restaurant that is empty apart from us. I have never seen it so quiet here. You can usually see the summer skiers on the glacier but the snow is a bit bare and nobody is ski-ing at the moment. Though the piste basher was out on the slopes so maybe later there may be some.
We used to spend a bit longer at the top because you could take a chairlift ride to even higher but when we came two years ago it had been taken down! Now they have a small cable car/gondola taking people up the same mountain which I didn't know about! Will know next year.
We arrive back in Nauders in time for lunch before going on a walk around the village with Charly at 14:30.
Even though Nauders is not a large town Charly makes the walk very interesting and funny. It is a nice gentle way to see how the people in these mountain villages work.
There are many stops on the walk to explain what we are seeing but also for Charly to chat with everyone who walks, cycles or drives by! He knows everyone! It is both funny and charming and puts a smile on everybodys face, no bad thing.
The flower boxes on the various houses are beautiful in their colours and arrangement and just set the village off against the mountains and clear blue sky.
Charly shows us a farm building with hay made the old fashioned way that he is keen for all to smell as well as farm buildings with their cow garlands hanging above the front doors. Where the hay is he asks if anybody would like to spend the night there as it is cheap the first night but then very expensive nine months later!!
We also see a set of small plaques framed outside another house which are awards for their cows - for the Miss World of cows according to Charly!
Our tour lasts two hours and we still didn't see all of Nauders! Back at the hotel we all enjoy a fresh piece of home made strudel and coffee which is delicious.
