Another sunny day as we leave the hotel at 9 o'clock for our excursion to St. Anton and Bregenz.
I haven't been to Bregenz before so I asked in the tourist office before we left if they could contact the office in Bregenz and find out the address for coach parking in Bregenz. This she gladly did and wrote down the address for me which Brian then put into his sst nav. This could be interesting as I'm driving today and it will be the first time I have ever used a sat nav!
We stop in St Anton and all end up in the same cafe as there is not a lot open when we are there but is still very pretty. I used to do a lot of tours here and it is always nice for the memory to re-visit these places.
Leaving St Anton we drive over the Arlberg Pass and rejoin the motorway towards Bregenz.
To pay tolls in Austria you have to purchase a Go-Box which is a small plastic box with a chip inside with all of the coach details on, and must be placed in the windscreen. Similar to a mobile telephone you can pay as you go or pay by contract. As we only come to Austria a couple of times a year we pay as you go. As you pass sensors on the motorway the machine beeps. Once is good, twice is good but be ready to top up, third is top up and four beeps is trouble!!
Oue box starts beeping four times! We'll top up on the way back.
Arriving in Bregenz the sat nav does its job and directs us to a coach park which seems a way from the centre. Bregenz is located at the southern end of Lake Constance and we wanted to be closer to the lake and town centre.
As we pulled into the coach park an empty coach pulled out so we followed him reasoning that he was going to pick up his passengers from the town. He did! And we found a parking place close to both the lake and the town. Everybody is happy and the passengers found it all highly amusing!
Brian, myself and the girls finally had our pizza in an Italian restaurant. I went back to the coach after as the others went for a walk by the lake.
On the way home I topped up the Go Box which proved quite expensive. The minimum amount you can top up with is €75! On top of this I had to pay €24 for all the time we had 4 beeps!
On arriving back at the hotel I was greeted with the bad news that one of our group was in hospital. There are two ladies, sisters, who stayed behind to go walking. They were walking from the top of the chairlift when one of them fell breaking her wrist and shoulder on different sides. She had to be taken to hospital by helicoptor. We are not sure how long she will be in hospital but it could be as long as 10 days.
After dinner tonight we enjoyed a few drinks including an expensive schnapps that is made from the root of a flower and tasted exactly like that. I quite liked it but it did taste of earth!
Was a little wobbly going to bed tonight!
