Wednesday 27 June
I don’t want to get up this morning as I’m still feeling the effects of the sun but like a real trooper manage it! I have drunk 1½ of water during the night which will not do me any harm but it does mean my trips to the loo are a bit more frequent!
We are going out at 09:00 so after a quick breakfast I walk up to the main road and wait for the car park man to pick me up at 08:00.
He is there bang on time and a couple of minutes later I am at the coach with plenty of time to wash the windscreen and clean the inside.
I am not driving to the hotel entrance as it is too tight so will pick the passengers up on the main road. They are all there ready and we are away at nine.
Today we are going to the two resorts of Pula and Rovinj, by coast road this morning and back by motorway later.
The coast road is absolutely stunning as we pass through pretty coastal villages and then climb high above the sea offering magnificent views of the coastline. The colour of the water is a beautiful blue and matched with the green of the land and clear blue sky it is a wonderful sight.
When I last drove this road three years ago there was a lot of roadworks but that has all finished now and the result is a lovely wide sweeping tarmac road that is an absolute pleasure to drive on.
And the journey time is a lot quicker.
After a short stop we arrive in Pula at 11:20 and I drop them all close to the magnificent amphitheatre. The road is up here and it is a bit of a problem turning but we manage it and I will pick them up at the coach park which is a short walk away.
Pula is a lovely, but busy, old town with many Roman monuments and an array of shops and restaurants.
I park up and wash the back of the bus before wandering over to the nearby cafe for a sandwich and more water. I don’t know how hot it is but it must be close to 30’ degrees.
I have been to Pula a few times now so spend most of my time sat on a bench (too hot to sit on bus) reading, making sure I keep my hat on!
We are stopping here for three hours which will allow enough time for lunch as well as a good walk round.
Departing here at 14:15 I drive along the old road (off the motorway) to the gorgeous resort of Rovinj.
It was here in Rovinj that Wendy and I saw the most magnificent super yacht called Luna and when I got back to our hotel googled it to find it was owned by Roman Abramavich but was only his second largest yacht!
Rovinj is another old town and harbour with quaint narrow streets leading up to the cathedral and lovely squares around the town. I have to park quite a way away so stay on a warm bus relaxing.
We are away from here at 16:30 and drive back via the motorway, a one lane motorway in places, arriving in Opatija by 17:45.
Opatija is busy but not too busy with coaches so I am able to park overnight in the coach park on the seafront and a short walk back to the hotel. This is much easier for me as I can stroll down at my leisure in the morning without worrying about being picked up on time.
Best I have a £1.67 beer before dinner.
