Austria Fairytale Castles Saturday 13 July 2013

A free day today.
I want to do a recce to the fairytale castles as it must be twenty years since my last visit and am worried about the walking involved for some of the passengers. The idea is to hire a car for the morning and whip up to Schwangau to have a look but I hit a stumbling block when the reception inform me there are no car hire places in Lermoos!
In the end I’m not too disappointed as it is a beautiful hot sunny day and I can relax around the village and the hotel.
I do some work sat on the terrace at the front of the hotel before going for a walk. Lermoos isn’t very big but it is very pretty (as are most Austrian villages) with a few shops, cafes, restaurants, a church and a cable car but no book shop! Occasionally you will find a souvenir shop selling some English language books but I’m out of luck today.
I bump into Barry and Jayne and we decide to go for a ride on the cable car followed by a chair lift.
Barry is a bit unsure about all of this so we decide to buy a ticket to go up the cable car and then the first of the two chairlifts that take you right to the summit. Once at the top there is a half hour walk to the restaurant.
The cable car or gondola, carries up to six passengers so plenty of room for the three of us and it is a very gentle ride with the car never far away from the mountain side.
Once at the top of here it is a short stroll to the chairlift which is a four man lift. Barry sits in the middle between Jayne and I!
Again this doesn’t come far from the mountain and is a very comfortable and peaceful ride. Jumping off at the top we can see lots of paragliders taking off high above us at the top of the second chair lift.
We then catch the chair down to sit on the sun terrace at the top of the cable car and enjoy a beer.
It was nice here as we sat with Marion and her friend Gill and Marion is an old friend of my mums who has known me since I was a wee boy! It was lovely to reminisce for half an hour.
We decide to go back to the village for our lunch so catch the cable down and go for a stroll into Lermoos. There is an attractive looking cafe with yellow umbrellas (they all look good in the sun with yellow umbrellas!) that we choose and sit down to enjoy a lovely lunch. The breakfast and dinner in the hotel is very good with plenty on offer so we all opt for a lighter lunch. I have a pea soup that comes served in a bread roll! The large roll has some of its centre taken out and is filled with the soup. The top of the roll is sliced off and can be dipped in the soup. Something new for me and absolutely delicious. I eat the soup and the bread inside the roll is now moist and tastes of the soup so I scoff all that down. While we’re waiting for the waitress to clear the table I am halfway through the roll itself!
All this action has made me tired so have a bit of a siesta this afternoon!
Dinner is good once again although not as hungry as I could be!

An early night for a read tonight. Damn no book!!
