Friday 03 August
We taxi it to the coach and return for 07:00 to load the cases before our departure at 08:00.
Even though we have porterage I have asked if the passengers can bring their own luggage down as I am not sure whether to believe we have a porter!
As it happens we do but he doesn’t have much to do.
After loading the coach we go to breakfast, along with most of the coach, and it is not ready! There are no eggs, no croissant , the coffee machine is empty or cold and not enough plates and bowls out.
I am completely cheesed off and could throttle the staff here. Again it is just not good enough and I think we are being treated appallingly. I don’t know where the splendid in the hotel name comes from because it is not a reflection on the hotel.
I have a coffee outside by the coach and am served by the young man who was our porter. He is really nice and from Brazil so we have a decent chat about football but he doesn’t agree with me that the best team in world football is Chelsea!!!
We are away at 08:00 and soon on the motorway towards Milan and then crossing the border intom Switzerland, stopping for a break at one of the motorway service areas.
From here it is a beautiful drive through the mountains to our lunch stop, again on the motorway, at Gotthard South services. We are not far from the Gotthard Tunnel and I wanted to stop before in case we have to queue again.
I ‘m glad we did because the queue for the tunnel is longer than the way down and we lose about an hour and a half. Not too much of a problem if we have no more hold ups.
Fine chance of that this week!
Getting through Basle is slow due to heavy traffic and then once in France we are slowed down by road works in Strasbourg. After here it should be plain sailing as the road towards Metz is normally very quiet, but not today!
We stop, wait, move a little, stop, wait, move a little and so it goes on, for another hour and a half.
While we are in the queue Hollie offers to make some hot drinks and it is then that I realise the blue hose is not the drinking water hose!!
I should have filled the other one up!
There must have been an accident for the traffic to stop completely and we also saw lots of emergency vehicles flying about.
When we came to the end of the jam there were roadworks but no sign of an accident. There must have been one because going from two lanes to one on this road would not cause the delay we have just had.
What a pain in the arse!!
We should have been at our overnight hotel at 17:30 but finally arrive at 21:20!
Straight into dinner and then bed.
Fenns coaches have a coach here tonight and a friend of mine David is driving but don’t see him tonight as it is so late he has gone to bed!
I wanted to fuel and water up but have run out of driving time.
